{HMW} When Aromas Unlock Your Food Memories

Dear Reader,

Have you ever wondered why certain smells instantly transport you back to your grandmother's kitchen? 👩‍🍳

The connection between scent and memory is powerful—researchers at Brown University found that our olfactory system links directly to the hippocampus, the memory center of our brain. (1)

This is why the aroma of baking bread or brewing coffee can trigger not just memories, but emotions and physical sensations too.

This is also why so much of my work around healing your relationship with food and body is steeped in the 5-senses and the mind/body connection. Getting more attuned to your internal body cues and honing your sensory awareness is foundational (IMO) towards having a balanced and healthy relationship with food.

My weekly "5-Senses Sunday" on Substack examines these fascinating connections, while paid subscribers also have access to my private podcast "Consciously Eaten" to receive deeper guidance on food and eating through the lens of neuroscience, psychology, sensory awareness and behavioral modification.

From now until March 18th - I'm offering Just One More Bite Premium at 25% off. That comes to only $6.75 a month or $75 for the year. As a Founding Member in our community, you will be grandfathered in at that rate forever and includes:

5-Senses Sunday

Remember the pure joy of tasting something for the first time—like a kid discovering mango? That rare, wide-eyed wonder hit me again this week with a surprising food find.

Plus, I’m diving into the science of humming (yes, it’s a stress hack!), the power of self-massage, and why watching a grown man see snow for the first time is exactly what your nervous system needs.

Want it:

This kitchen tool is so simple (and cheap!) yet I know it will relieve my OCD tendency to scoop out every single morsel in a bowl.

Ingredient Spotlight:

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds (sometimes called hemp hearts) have a mild, nutty flavor with a soft, creamy texture that makes them incredibly versatile in the kitchen.

Nutritionally, hemp seeds are a complete protein source—containing all nine essential amino acids—which is rare in the plant world. Just three tablespoons deliver about 10 grams of protein! They're also loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the ideal ratio for our bodies, plus fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.

My favorite ways to enjoy hemp seeds:

🍽️Sprinkled over morning oatmeal or yogurt for a protein boost

🍽️Blended into smoothies for added creaminess

🍽️Mixed into homemade energy balls with dates and nut butter

🍽️Tossed onto salads for a subtle crunch

🍽️Stirred into soups just before serving
