{HMW} What your sleep schedule is doing to your appetite

Dear Reader,

Have you ever endured an agonizing night of sleeplessness, only to feel like a bottomless pit of ravenous hunger throughout the next day? πŸ‘‹

Chronic lack of sleep or sleep quality changes the hormones, ghrelin and leptin, that tell your brain whether you're hungry or full. I noticed it in my own life after three babies in seven years. I was ravenous ALL the time.

That's the topic for the next Mindful Lounge, September 30 at 12pm ET. Sleep, energy chronotype, and the reasons exhaustion drives our appetites.

This month we're going deep on late-night or middle-of-the-night eating β€” the hormones, the internal clock, and the three energy patterns that explain why a schedule that works for someone else may never work for you.

I'll also walk you through a somatic practice to shift your body out of stress-mode before or after a nighttime meal. (If you grind your teeth at night, this one is especially for you.)

Plus, for those who attend the event live, I'll share my collection of the best foods and recipes for satisfying slumber.

The Mindful Lounge is a paid-member gathering, but I'm opening a $1 Preview Ticket β€” pay what feels right, starting at $1.

Come with your own midnight fridge stories. We'll have plenty.

Free if you're a paid Just One More Bite member.

$1 gets everyone else a preview seat.

5-Senses Sunday

This week's 5-Senses Sunday is a little bit different, and I'd love your feedback! Five short guided meditations, one for each sense: taste, scent, sound, touch, and sight. Each one is built to shift your nervous system from stressed to settled before a meal. I designed them with Highly Sensitive People in mind, but they work for anyone.

Listen before you eat, then tell me what you notice. Take a listen here.

Ingredient Spotlight:

Pink Lady Apples

My mom used to ask if I wanted a "nice apple" when I got home from school. I hated them. Whatever was in the fruit bowl was either rock hard or mealy, and the only options back then seemed to be red delicious or the green ones, which were so sour they left my tongue itchy. I gave up on apples completely for years. Then in 2001 I tried a Pink Lady, and that was it. Now I'm the clichΓ© who eats one a day, at least.

Pink Ladies are crisp instead of mealy, sweet-tart instead of sour, which is probably why one converted someone who'd sworn off the whole fruit.

They're also really good for you: high in fiber, full of antioxidants, and a source of quercetin, a compound tied to gut health.
