{HMW} The case for a summer self-care list

Dear Reader,

Summer is asking more of your nervous system than you probably realize. Heat, shifting routines, social pressure, etc . For a lot of people, and this includes me, summer brings a particular kind of depletion.

I feel a lot of pressure to socialize (even when I just want quiet alone time)

At the same time, I also feel FOMO (everyone's having fun at the beach but me!)

I also feel the pull to take advantage of seasonal foods that we don't get year round here in the Northeast.

To avoid overwhelm or risk overcommitting to things I like to create a summer self-care list and I encourage you to do the same! Here's what's on my list so far.

🏝️ Go to at least 1 beach and get in the water

🍉 Have watermelon, peaches and heirloom tomatoes as often as I can

☀️ Go on a hike & visit my favorite ice cream place on the way home

🏓 Do at least 1 recreational activity, hobby or sport outside

What's on your Summer self-care list?

This month's Mindful Lounge in the Just One More Bite community is addressing all of that and more in our next session, Summer Body Budget: what drains your body in summer and what helps fuel it?

If you'd like to join us, it's not too late - we start at noon est today. You can purchase a ticket to the event for as little as $1. (pay what you can model)

There will be discussion, a short practice, and handouts you can keep using through the season.

Paid members of the Heartbeat community, this session is included in your membership. Free members, you can join for as low as $1 this month. The link to upgrade is below.

Ingredient Spotlight:

Rotisserie Chicken

Most of you know that I'm vegan, but I cook for a family that very much is not. Rotisserie chicken is one of those that is a mainstay for them and here's why. For somewhere around $5 to $10, you walk out of the store with a fully cooked, seasoned bird that can feed your family for days.

In our house, we grab a rotisserie chicken and eat it as-is the first night. Once the initial dinner is over, my husband pulls the rest of the meat off the bones and shred it. From there it becomes the base of at least two or three more meals: salads, stir fries, grain bowls, tacos, soup, sandwiches.

On the nutrition side, chicken is one of the more straightforward protein sources out there. A 3-ounce serving delivers around 25 grams of protein, which supports muscle maintenance, keeps you fuller longer, and helps stabilize blood sugar when paired with fiber and fat.

The only thing worth noting: store-bought rotisserie chickens can be high in sodium, so if that's something you're watching, just keep it in mind.
