{HMW} Food can be doing a job that has nothing to do with hunger

Dear Reader,

If you've been white-knuckling your way through "only eat when physically hungry," here's some permission: emotional eating is allowed. Especially while you're building new coping mechanisms. Food can be doing a job that has nothing to do with your appetite.

It might be decompression after a day that asked too much of your senses. Pleasure when you're running on empty.

Comfort when you're lonely.

Stimulation when you're bored.

A transition ritual between work and home.

Relief from decision fatigue.

A way to finally stop thinking for five minutes. Sensory pleasure.

Or even a tiny moment that belongs only to you.

Can we please retire the idea that eating only counts as "okay" when your stomach is growling?

This week, when you reach for food outside of hunger, get curious instead of critical.

Ask what it's actually giving you.

You may even be surprised by the answer....

As soon as insurance (or medicare at this rate) covers this, I am all over it. I think this type of testing should actually be mandatory for people over 40. There are just too many instances where early detection and treatment make all the difference in someone's prognosis. What do you think? Would you take advantage of this if cost wasn't an issue?

Ingredient Spotlight:

Hot Sauce

I used to watch my mom sprinkle Tabasco on everything when I was a kid. I was intrigued, so I tried it on my pasta and spent the next hour guzzling milk to cool my tongue. I swore off hot sauce for years, until sriracha came onto the scene and I finally understood the fuss.

Hot sauce isn't one flavor, it's a whole spectrum. Tabasco is sharp and vinegar-forward, the kind of heat that hits fast and fades. Sriracha is rounder, garlicky, a little sweet underneath the burn.

The heat comes from capsaicin, the compound in chili peppers that also triggers that mild endorphin rush you feel after a spicy bite. It's linked to a short-term bump in metabolism, and since most hot sauces start with peppers, you're getting a bit of vitamin C along the way too.
